Signs of Spring
Spring has arrived, and as I write, Snowdrops and Primroses are already in bloom. By the time you read this, Bluebells should also be making their appearance. Everything seems to be happening earlier this year. The rain has turned many side tracks into muddy trails, and I am often surprised to see people wearing unsuitable footwear. The leaf buds are swelling and I am eagerly anticipating the moment I can walk beneath the lime green canopy on a sunny day.
Snowdrop Donations and Planting
Thank you to those who donated snowdrops. We will plant some in Millar Wood on Elm Road, opposite the speed camera, and in a central area of Common Wood. In due course, a seat will be added to create a peaceful spot where visitors can enjoy the wood far from the pressures of daily life.
Log Sales and Work Parties
Log sales have been successful, and our work parties have been busy cutting and splitting wood to replenish the store. Although the logs are quite damp at present, they will dry out as they are covered. If you require logs for next winter, please order soon, especially if you have dry storage available to ensure they are ready for use.
Our current price is £100 for a cubic metre delivered loose, email woods@pennandtylersgreen.org.uk to place your order.
The tasks of splitting logs or pulling holly are incredibly helpful to us, and we view them as a ‘green gym’—a great way to get fit for free!
Woodland Management Plan
This is the first year implementing our management plan. Some thinning will take place, but it will be scheduled for later in the year, after the nesting season. It is essential that all users of the wood respect its flora and fauna, stay on designated paths, and keep dogs close and under control. Please be aware that several dogs have been gored by Muntjac deer, which possess sharp horns.
Community Events and Support
By the time this issue reaches you, Easter will be upon us, and the annual Easter trail be keenly anticipated by many families. We have more events planned, and details will be published online or via social media well in advance. These events are vital as they generate funds and encourage volunteers, both of which are necessary for maintaining and managing the wood. Tools are also indispensable, and every year we add to our collection—saws, loppers, and mattocks are just some of those needed. This year, some volunteers will need retraining to ensure their certifications remain current. You can support us by becoming a Friend or donating; more information is available on in the Woodlands section.
Join Our Work Parties
Work parties are held on the first and third Saturdays and the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. We meet at 10:00 and work for a couple of hours, followed by a well-earned coffee or tea and perhaps a biscuit or two. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new friends—do come along!
