Hundreds of villagers turned out at the Red Lion, Penn on Sunday 16 August to thank Joe Gleeson for 41 years of dedicated service as the Village Butcher of Distinction.
Joe was presented with a model of the shop, created by a local potter and a gift from the village to help Joe with his new barbecue, both handed over by David Byrne.
Joe was granted the very first Honorary Freedom of the Parish of Penn in recognition of his unflagging service to the community, presented by Mike West, Chair of Penn Parish Council. Maybe Joe will be seen driving sheep across the common in the future?!
Countess Howe recounted the incredible service Joe has given to the village during four decades and then Joe gave a heart warming speech ending with a toast to the community and thanks to his wife, Lorraine and family.
The last day of trading was Saturday 29 August when a steady queue of customers came to buy their last, say thanks and wish Joe good luck in his retirement.
Joe will be sorely missed by the village, especially as the business will not be taken on.
