First of all, this is not a guide to local pubs, nor is it a history of beer. This book is a history of Penn and Tylers Green’s pubs – including those in Penn Street, Knotty Green and Forty Green – accompanied by a historical overview of the villages and many photographs.
We have investigated the history not only of the eight surviving pubs, but also nine former pubs and two working men’s clubs – and the breweries which once supplied them – and tried to demonstrate what a vital element they were in the social life of their time. Sadly, Britain’s pub estate is diminishing relentlessly though Penn and Tylers Green’s pubs are, at the time of writing, bucking that trend.
The authors:
Andrew Mullis is a pub historian who has published pub history articles in the Bucks Free Press and has a blog called Chiltern Pubs.
Miles Green is a well-known local historian who has published a number of books on the history of Penn and Tylers Green.
Andrew approached Miles in 2023 to discuss a proposed article on Penn and Tylers Green's pubs.
Those discussions resulted in this book.
