Common Wood – Management

Common Wood was purchased by the Penn & Tylers Green Residents Society in 2003 following an extensive public campaign. With support from the Woodland Trust, the Chiltern Society and the Lottery Heritage Fund, the Society has been able to safeguard the wood for the benefit of the local community.
Common Wood is recognised as ancient semi-natural woodland but during the latter decades of the 20th century Common Wood was managed under private ownership to provide a commercial return. Extensive felling took place in the 1980s and 90s and several young plantations were established in the gaps, some containing species that are not native to the woodland.
Following the change of ownership in 2003, our management approach creates and conserves a more natural and sustainable native woodland environment. This is intended, over the long term, to reverse the spread of non-native species, and to restore the whole site to ancient semi-natural woodland.
Management objectives and operations are largely focussed on conserving and improving woodland biodiversity. In particular, we manage the wood so that it comfortably complies with the requirements specified by UKWAS, for species proportions and for protecting and enhancing biodiversity.
