Village Care
Penn and Tylers Green Village Care was founded nearly 25 years ago. A group of local volunteers help anyone in the village who need practical help with going out of the house, we take our clients to all sorts of local destinations, and thereby provide help and contact for people who might otherwise not get out or meet people.
Here are a few questions to explain how Village Care works:
What is Village Care?
We are a team of some fifty volunteer drivers and twenty five volunteer telephonists, who take calls from our 75 "clients" in the Penn and Tylers Green village who want to be taken from their homes to various destinations (and brought back).
Who are our clients?
Anyone in the Penn and Tylers Green area who needs a lift, young and old. Our only limitation is the ability of some of our drivers to handle wheel chairs.
Where do we go?
Anywhere reasonably local, and further afield for medical purposes. Popular destinations are hospitals, surgeries, supermarkets, hairdressers and local shops. Drivers use their own cars, so that some cars may not be suitable for everyone. We work closely with Penn and Highfield Surgeries.
How does one contact Village Care?
You ring 01494 816909 between 10 am and 1.00 pm, Mondays to Fridays, to book your ride. We are closed on Bank Holidays and in the second half of December. We do not provide an emergency service, so all bookings have to be made at least one day before, and not more than two weeks before the event. You will get confirmation, and be given the name of your driver.
What happens then?
The driver will come to your address and collect you. All subsequent arrangements are then between you and the driver. The service is free, but we welcome any donations.
What else?
We organise the P&TG Open Gardens Day in the summer. Besides being a great day out, it raises funds for us and for other charities, such as the Iain Rennie Hospice.
So do use us: we have a super band of volunteers. But we can always do with a few more drivers (particularly with 4x4s!) and more telephonists, who work the telephone between 10am and 1.00 pm. Volunteers are not placed under any obligation, as we can usually re-organise to suit everyone.
